    August Roundup + September Goals

    Posted in Food | Poker

August has been my busiest month of the year to date in regards to poker. I played a total of 208.61 hours (gotta get that .61 in there) which at 6-12 tables comes to a nice even 116,665 hands. For the most part I felt like I played very well although there were definitely some periods of sub-optimal play, but they are becoming farther and fewer between.

I basically ran like god at 2/4 and then mediocre to very bad at every other level. VPP-wise I came in just short of my goal which was 150k:

That’s okay though — extrapolating forward if I can sustain the same pace for the next 3 months I will still finish the end of November as SNE and can have a breezy December.

    September Goals:

    • 120k Hands
    • 150k VPPs
    • 100 BIs
    • Win a WCOOP Bracelet, one time?
    • Start making videos for PokerStrategy again
    • Eat better / exercise more / blah blah blah

That just about sums it up. Also I should mention that I am not taking any more students for full time coaching as of right now. If you want to have your database analysed or only want 1-2 hours then we could perhaps work something out but this month is going to be a busy one with SNE grinding + WCOOP + everything else.

Hope everyone else had a great August and has a good September!

Here’s a bonus couple of pics of something I’ve been cooking up a bit lately:

      Hey Roy,

With NLH you can use cardrunnersEV for postgame analysis, sngwizard, pokerstove (the list goes on). I was wondering how you go about post game analysis playing PLO??

      thanks!

        Hey Rob,

Your best bet is Pro PokerTools – it’s the closest to pokerstove you can get for PLO.

Thanks Roy! I’m guessing there is nothing available where I can punch in an X% hand range and return all the combos? I might have to code something for this!

Hmm I don’t know if PPT has that functionality or not, but if it doesn’t then I doubt any other program out there does.

The problem with talking about hand ranges as percentages in PLO is that ranking them is a real difficulty. For example do you go by which hand would win all-in at showdown? In that case a hand like AK73 would be better than 8765 but we all know which one everyone will rather player (and which one will be more profitable most of the time). If you figure out some way to accurately rank hands based on how people play them and the information is applicable to real game experience and code something for that I daresay you would be somewhat of a hero in the PLO community.

I am not sure if it is possible though due to different people playing different hands in different ways. To sum up, two very good, winning players can both be playing the exact same preflop stats of 30% VPIP and 20% PFR yet they can be playing vastly different hands. A hand in the top 20% for one player to raise could very easily not be in the others range and so forth.

Yeah there is def alot I have to think about if I take it on as a project. I think I’d have to go with conventional AIEV of the hand rather than postflop playability. I’m pretty interested in doing it if I can get some time. I think what you mention is a bit of a problem with NLH also. For instance if you see a guy is 3betting you 18% and punch in 18% on stove it will assume the top 18% which isn’t always the case. To combat this I’d have it customizable most likely so that you can reweight the range towards what you perceive villain’s preferences to be. CardrunnersEV does a good job of this for NLH imo, having something like that for PLO would be siiiick :D Thanks for your input, if I ever make a go of this project I will let you know.

HI I have a question, instead of NLHE, do you think that PLO is one of the
closest games at all the levels? I mean, once you have some edge on the game,
you need less skills for climb the high stakes, instead of NLHE where it is not
really easy to climb the mountain. All this about the SH tables. I hope you understand me, english is not my native language.

I think I get what you’re saying. I think PLO is quite close simply because at the 2/4 to 5/10 levels there will be fewer games running and a lot of the times the same regulars will be playing all games so they will run very close in difficulty. I’m not sure with the situation is with NLHE so I can’t compare directly to that.

Thanks for your fast response, i have tried all the NLHE games, and finally I feel comfortable with PLO. So weird…thanks for all your material an ideas.
